The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), an agency under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, made a public presentation and illustration of Solar Powered Electronic Voting Machine with Cloud-Based Election Result Collation.
During the presentation, the Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Engr. Prof. M.S. Haruna stated that the Solar Powered Electronic Voting Machine will address most of the current Electoral challenges with several advantages.
He said the Machine will eliminate ballot box snatching, multiple thumb printing, failure of the card reader, alteration of data between polling units and collation centers. There is also provision for real-time election result as voting progresses, diaspora voting. Also incorporated is facial recognition, radio frequency identification, etc.
In his words during the presentation, the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said,
“NASENI has made this major contribution to our nation. For too long, the election in Nigeria have been characterized by malpractices and a lot of energy and resources have been put into both pre-election and post-election periods in terms of people spending years in court because election where not truly free and fair. President Muhammadu Buhari has promised Nigerians that he will work for free and fair elections and we believe that it is our responsibility in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to contribute to making it possible for our nation to really have free and fair elections. “
“We want elections to be something that people will just move into and then cast their votes and then go back and continue with their lives. We believe that it is important that every vote should count and that every voter must matter and this is what will make our democracy strong. Then we will be in a position to elect Nigerians who will offer selfless service to the nation because they will represent the interest of those who elected them. If elections are not free and fair, those who are elected through falsification and malpractices will not really owe so much to Nigerians.”
“We thank you so much for this major contribution. This solar powered electronic voting system has many advantages. In addition to helping us achieve free and fair elections, it is also going to help us to make sure that we can conduct all our elections on the same day as it is being done in many of the advanced countries of the world. We are happy that this is homegrown and this was a challenge I threw to them (NASENI). I said “NASENI you have to do this” because they conduct research in Nanotechnology, they conduct research in artificial intelligence and I am happy to let Nigerians know that we have the capacity to do research in these areas.”
“Also NASENI is at the forefront of renewable energy research and innovation in the country. They have a facility in Karshi, just nearby and I invite you to visit that facility where we manufacture solar panels. Making it solar powered is to make sure that we don’t have the failure because our country is blessed to receive sunlight most hours of the day. We will be in a position to do our elections in a way that there won’t be any disruption.”
NASENI has over time developed indigenous technological solutions such as the Hydroelectric turbine, Solar modules of various wattages, Tricycles, Motorcycles, High efficient energy-saving LED lights, Inverters, Education science kits, Tertiary institution science and engineering laboratory equipment, Rotary furnace, Farm implements, etc.
